Flooding in Myitkyina as Ayeyarwady River rises; rescue operations underway

Low-lying neighbourhoods in Myitkyina have been inundated due to rising water levels in the Ayeyarwady River, according to local reports.

Heavy rainfall on the morning of June 1 caused the river to overflow into low-lying residential areas. Firefighters and rescue teams from the Myitkyina Township Fire Station collaborated with local organizations to evacuate affected households to safer ground.

A Myitkyina resident said on June 2, "The river water has receded slightly today."

However, the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology warned that the Ayeyarwady River in Myitkyina has already exceeded its danger level by about two inches and could rise another 1.5 feet in the next 24 hours, remaining above critical levels.

Authorities have advised residents living near the riverbanks and in low-lying areas to relocate to flood shelters as a precaution.
