On the morning of June 9, a Singapore-flagged container ship, MV Wan Hai 503, experienced an explosion and fire onboard. The vessel was carrying 22 crew members, of whom 18 were successfully rescued, according to Indian media reports.
The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) detected the incident and launched a rescue mission using the ship DG. By 4:30 PM on June 9, 18 crew members had been saved. Among them, two sustained serious injuries, while four others suffered minor wounds. Emergency medical treatment was promptly provided.
The ICG, along with immigration authorities, the New Mangalore Port Authority, and local police, are ensuring the rescued crew members receive timely and effective medical care.
The vessel had departed from Colombo Port on June 6 with 22 crew members and was scheduled to arrive at Nhava Sheva Port in Mumbai on June 9. The fire broke out about 88 nautical miles off the coast of Beypore, Kerala.
Reports on social media confirm that one Myanmar national onboard survived the life-threatening incident and is currently receiving medical treatment.
