A sudden storm and powerful waves struck the mouth of Taw Htwin Gyi Creek in Myeik Township on June 7, resulting in the deaths of three family members and leaving one missing while they were collecting shellfish.
According to local sources, six people had gone out in a small wooden boat to gather clams and mussels. They anchored near the creek’s mouth and were searching along the sandbank when heavy rain and strong winds abruptly hit, triggering large waves that capsized them. Nearby boat crews rushed to rescue the victims.
Five individuals were pulled from the water: Daw Zar Zar Cho (33), Ma Saung Thondra San (4), Maung Thaw Hmu Khant (10), Ma Su Sandi Cho (8), and Ma Mee Nge (33). Tragically, Daw Zar Zar Cho, Ma Saung Thondra San, and Maung Thaw Hmu Khant were found dead, while Ma Su Sandi Cho and Ma Mee Nge, who had nearly drowned, were rushed to Myeik People’s Hospital for treatment. A 10-year-old boy, Maung Nay Toe, remains missing, and search efforts are ongoing.
Local residents confirmed that the victims were family members. Charity groups assisted in transporting the deceased and injured to the hospital. Authorities are investigating the incident.
